The history of Pearl

Commonly known as the "Queen of gems" pearls have been a precious gemstone across cultures for thousands of years and are actually the oldest 'gemstone'.  As a universal stone each culture has their own unique origin story. The ancient greeks believed Aphrodite, the goddess of love shed pearls for tears; a similar myth in Arabian cultures who believed that pearls formed from dewdrops that were swallowed by oysters when they fell into the sea.Pearls were presented as gifts to Chinese royalty dating back to as early as 2300 BC, while the ancient Romans considered pearl jewellery to be a symbol of affluence. In fact, in 1st century BC Julius Caeser introduced a law limiting pearl jewellery to only be worn by the ruling classes.Fragments of pearl jewellery was found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess dating back to 420 BC. Cleopatra also treasured pearls and was thought to have owned the two biggest in the world.
